Image Book Process

I decided to make a folder and little cards for my image book project. This was my original folder but i created the folder too big thinking giving it extra room would be best but it made it look ugly. I created a belly band for it but it was too small and did not fit around the folder.

Front and Back of my second folder. This time i measured it just enough for the cards to fit. I don't know why the color printed out different but i like this color a little better. I also made another belly band and LOVED how it looked around the folder. =] I also added a title to it after seeing all the other books in class. I like my final piece the only thing i regret is using a x-acto knife to cut my cards.... I SHOULD OF USED A CUTTING BOARD!! but i kind of feel weird standing there at kincos cutting my cards. I was taking my time and than this lady was standing in line to use it. I didnt want to be rude and stand there all day so i went home. Learned my lesson with cutting paper..... I wish it was PERFECT!

1. Creating Tape

The tape look so real! I liked this tutorial, thought it was easy to follow the guys did a good job explaining. it looks so real! The new tools i learned in this tutorial is the layer styles and blending modes you can use to change the effect which made the tape. I learned that you can fill the dotted rectangles. cool stuff!

This tutorial was kind of funny. The guy made some pretty harsh comments but its okay. I got learn a few new tools. The liquify tool, healing brush, spot healing, clone and patch.

I thought this was really creative! the pen tool does wonders. Layers are so important as well. I thought this tutorial was pretty easy to follow. they included a video tutorial with the step by step image tutorial. thats a PLUS!

what caught my attention on this one was the lines on the ice cream bar. The ice cream bar is super precise and looks flawless so i wanted to check it out. I liked how this tutorial was a little bit more detailed when explaining the steps. There was one thing that seemed like it could of been done an easier way.
"grab the Move Tool and while holding down the Alt key press the Right Arrow key 89 times, until you reach "Bar copy 89" in the layers palette."
Really? thats crazyyy. I guess that just shows that there is more than one way to do something. && there is a lot of steps in this tutorial. Only for an ice cream bar. pretty cool details though.

5. Useful Applications for the Clone Stamp Tool

They were able to straighten the leaning tower of pisa that was awesome! Oh i love the clone tool. it is so fun to use. I never thought it did this kind of stuff. I only used it for simple things before and already thought it was cool but now this is even better. Cool tutorial! It did example on more than one object. i enjoyed the tower one the most.

1. Craft a Dramatic Vector Landscape Environment

This one really frustrated me! I was only doing the grass and illustrator wouldn't do what i wanted. I wanted to have it gradient and green at the same time and it would only let me choose one. I couldn't find a way to do it and it drove me nuts. This is the type of thing that makes me want to pull all my hair out. So than I had to ask someone! so the trick was drag and drop the color in. OMG. well that part took forever... moving on.

here i added the sky, stars and the moon. The complete sky scene is complete! After the grass everything else becomes is a piece of cake! The stars are so pretty =]

Watching professional do their work is always fun! They always tend to go so fast though... I hope someday i can do this as fast as they can. BUT than again... its probably just the video that makes it seem so fast.

I just had a feeling this would come in handy someday. if you place the shadow at the right place, it makes the image more realistic because it has shadow. Although the tutorial said tips.. but it did not have tips. It went through a few short steps of how to make the color flow. It was not a really helpful tutorial.

I like this design but the tutorial sucked. It was not detailed so i could not follow along. I did like how they used a little drawing and connect it to create this design. They also made this design in all black which looked a little bit plain.

Simple instructions! i love it. turned out pretty good. =] The only problem i had was sending a layer behind another. First it did not work so i thought i was pressing the wrong buttons. So instead of using the combo i copy and paste it over to cover the layers. The combo for moving it behind worked towards the end when i tried to use it again. Other than that everything else was easy to follow.

the treatment to the image are pretty simple. Using gardient and the pen tool. I still have some trouble controlling the pen tool and making those curves like they appear in the picture.

Although i like video tutorials this one wasnt as helpful because the person explaining it did not explain every step and why he did something. He just did it and briefly explain it afterward. I mean you can probably make out what hes trying to do becuse its a video and its easier to follow along but he jumped through some of the steps too fast. He started off pretty detailed but slowly got off track.

This was as simple as it gets! I like the splatter paint effect on the text. It best thing was it just took a few simple steps. I did not have some of the brushes the tutorial used which took away from the whole splattered paint effect but i tried to find other brushes that looked similar to paint. I need to find some new brushes.

This is kind of a good idea for the image book! taking a photo of splashed paint and combining it to my image. Kind of a waste of pain though.. Maybe i use something other than paint. The pen tool does amazing things. no wonder they say that the pen tool is your best friend. haha. true true.

The lighting on the text looks really cool! What i liked most was the video haha. A new thing i learned from this tutorial is character. You can change the position of the each letter. that is how they got the ST to touch on PST. There are many things that havea lready been done before but creating your own thing can be done by changing little details.

5. The Brush Tool 101

The brush tool is probably the most underestimated tool in photoshop. It seems too easy people dont even think about it. I learned about the brush hardness, opacity flow, air brush, creating a shape and picture brush and chaning the shape dimantic. The air brush does not seem useful thought.. This tuturial was 100 percent helpful. I newed a bunch of new things about the brush tool. it does a lot more than i thought.

This was a follow up to the previous tutorial i read. This became very fustrated for me. I attemted to do the tutorial but there were so many little things i did not know how to do or get too. So i ended up just reading it. I figured how to trace the boombox out but could not create another layer for it. So than i just decided to learn how to create the dots in the background. It was a good cool touch i like the effect it gives the image.

2. Coloring/ReColoring

This was the original picture of the flower

I changed the color of the whole image until i got the color i like on the flower. Ignoring the background(water) this will be changed later.

This is the one that i changed. In this tutorial i used the mask tool to cover up the horrible background that was changed along with the color of the flower. I used the original background(water). AND TAADA. its was too simple so i'm not going to use it as a tutorial i did but i just wanted to add it on here.

3. Photoshop Tools 101

I just thought this would be helpful and help me start to use the tools effectively. It was a really beginning level tutorial. I think i have an understand of all the tools. The gradient tool was something i just learned about. Before i did not find a use for it but i guess you just need to be creative.

The details made this image come to life. it would of looked so computerized if it wasnt for the wood grain texture on the guitar. This tutorial was okay, it did get confusing when applying the texture. but overall it was a good tutorial.

I was looking for a tutorial for photo retouching and found this one. This tutorial made it look difficult. I think there is a simplier way to do it. 1. How to Create a Website Mascot

I thought this was very cute so i decide to draw one myself. My mascot is a girl soccer team.

This was fun! Even though it took forever. I enjoyed it and wanna do something again. Maybe with more details. I did try to add shadow on her skin and clothes but its hard to see with this tiny photo so did a close up screen shot. This tutorial did not help much with the computer designing part so i actually had to go back to a tutorial i had in week 3 or so do help me. That tutorial was really helpful.

2. Digitally Collage a camouflage paper

I thought this tutorial was fairly simple.

3. Turning a photo into Lichtenstein Style Pop Art

I love how you can take a photo of a person and transform it into a cartoon character on photoshop. I'm sure everybody wants to know how they would look as a cartoon! I know i would. This is a little different from other cartoon tutorials ive seen. This one has more of a comic thing to it. The texture is different. Personally i don't like the little dots, i dont know why but i just dont like how it looks.

This was really easy! It was also pretty fun to do. I think the only problem was i didnt choose a good close up photo for this. You have to get really close to see the eye color because i made it a dark blue color. At first i went with a jade green than i changed it to blue. Cool tutorial!

I think i like video tutorials better than just a regular tutorial. It helps me when the person accually goes over each step and i get to see and follow along. Helps me remember. The thing about this tutorial was he got a little confusing after about 2 mins into the video. I think its because he combined Layer, Vector and Clipping masking into one tutorial... So it got me a little confused. I think if he actually did something to the image using mask instead of just putting shapes on the picture and using the mask to high a part of it. That confused me a little too... overall, i like video tutorials better.

3. Create Cartoon Character with Expressive lines

i came across this and thought the background was interested so i read about it. They scanned a wrinkly piece of paper to add some effect behind the girl and i thought that was neat. This tutorial was not satisfying to me because i was hoping to learn how to do the background with the pink swirls and dots. At the end their were websites to other tutorials that taught that. Which i also looked into.

this tutorial taught me how to making the shape(image) metallic. It makes the image 3D sort of. I think adding affects to a simple shape gives it more of an oomph. Wow this awesome! This is something i would really enjoy doing... if only i knew how. The artist did go really really fast. I really like the textture behind the glow. You cant see the texture unless you get really close up though. I tried to do this tutorial but there were a few steps missing. Probably my fault my to pick something that was so advanced. It didnt look advance at a glance. Really cool affect!

This effect looks awesome! I do not like watercolor but to do it digitally... that might be something totally different. I do like the effect it leaves the picture. Its easier to clean up your mistakes and redo something as many times as you want. vs watercolor when once you stick the brush down, its permanent. That was always my frustration with painting.

This was fun to play with, there are so many ways you can play and arrange your type. I think photoshop can do a lot more to the text than illustrator. My favorite is the mask tool, an image within the text. For this tutorial i went through and tried thigns i did not know how to do yet.

I havent mastered the pen tool yet so this was a little difficult. I wasn't really sure how to place the points to create that curl and to make a certain curved line that i want. The Spirograph are cool looking though.

4. How to use Effects to Create a Cool Design

After reading this i thought of a faster and similar way to do this design without going through all the things they did. Make little circles and place them in a line. Changing the size a little and changing the color. To make a burst of color coming from the middle, take a brush, choose a color and make a dot with a fading brush. I think that would do it.

This was a cool tutorial because it also gave a brief intro about how to take the photo on the camera before taking it into Photoshop. I like how the main point of the image is isolated. I’ve seen this this effect before on pictures before and thought it was a cool. With a high end camera i think you can even take a photo with the camera and get this effect.

1. Create a Super Happy Octopus Character

I started off with a pretty hard one and couldn’t do it because I did not understand some of the terms they were using so I figured I should start off with an easy one since I am a beginner. The octopus one started off easy, than when I got about one third the way down they started jumping around in their explaining which confused me, I wasn’t sure what they were talking about so I used tools I knew how to use that would get me to the same spot in the instructions. I was pretty happy with my result except the background. I found a lot of tutorials don’t explain step by step, they assume people know so that did not help me. But it was a fun process.

Process of LOGO project

I used pentool to trace the banana lady and the text because I couldnt find anything like it. I hardest part of this was creating the oval background. I couldnt get pentool to make that for me so i used pencil to draw it. I even learned how to smooth the egdes out which was awesome! i alwayed whated to learn that. YAY. This logo recreating project was good practice and my pentool skills improved!

Postcard Project Reflection

I started this project off wrong by misunderstanding the instructions. After looking at Kate's design i realized i did it totally wrong! haha So after looking at more Julia Rothman's patterns more i copied down some details in her designs to incorpate in my pattern. At first i tried to put together so many of the pictures i drew down and it became too busy. It was hard to pick just a few because i liked them all! The first one was too busy and i figured that out the second time around. I also took some feedback on flickr and changed the colors. I came across one of her patterns and it happen to be my favorite colors so i decided to use that. Working with patterns are so FUN!

You've all seen her work, its amazing! I like her patterns because of how simple they can be, but she makes them work! I also like the use of color on her designs. Her patterns are printed on everything from wallpaper, pillows, mugs, to shirts, She also has many type of patterns not just one theme. Looking through her work makes me want to have eveyrthing around me full of patterns, color and designs. Looking a my plain white walls is so boring. We all could use her patterns on our walls! I wonder if she has her designs on her own wall.

I found the adobe live docs to be helpful, although some parts were hard to follow. Cleared up some of my confusion i had with working with the layers. It helps to follow along with the instructions by doing the steps with the program. The pen tool was a little frustrating to me because of all the extra lines that come out of other lines..

Chris Spooner created a website with a collection of images he liked and this is one from the list. This style is interesting. Using a real person and adding graphic design to it makes it exciting. This image also happens to have type in it. The extra graphic behind it adds movement to the child and the way it is positioned. Because this picture seems random to me, I wonder why the artist created this image for. Or was it just a random creation?

She goes by the screen name Even on flickr and that’s as close of a name I could get from her. There are so many things you can do to a picture of a person in photoshop. This image is amazing, it looks like it tells a story about her, but it could have multiple meanings. She used photoshop to create this image; it was a smart idea to have her mask just is her skin with a different face on it. After looking at this image, I want to try and make something similar to this with an image of my face.

This image looks complex and the little details make it come alive. I like when text gets surrounded with designs and in this case, the vines and flowers make it girly and fun. With the design around it, it catches the eye more. It makes the text less boring. This is something I would like to learn how to make. The image looks like it carries a lot of layers. I’m guessing it was created with photoshop. Did the artist create those flowers and vines or did he get it from another photo? I find it easy to use existing

Color is awesome! I love adding a bunch of color to things. Color makes it come alive and gives a happy vibe. This image reminds me of summer, when the sun is out and the flowers are blooming. The image is based off a simple shape, but is resized and colored differently to create this image.

This is a photograph of a night scene in London by David Gutierrez. He had so many amazing photos I had a hard time picking just one photo. This is the type of picture that hurts my guts! This picture was taken at a great angle. The reflection in the water is so clear, as if the picture was edit in photoshop. But from the description I read, that was the reflection of the bridge in the water. I like this photo for many reasons, well of course because it is so break taking, it is so clear and sharp. If this photograph was burry it would have just taken away from the photo. I love night scene photos of buildings and the reflections it leaves on the water. Like downtown Portland at night. I wonder what was going through his mind when he took this picture. The angle looks like he could have been lying on the ground to capture this shot.

Favorite Websites: I forgot the name but this website that updates quotes and photos every once in a while. They post awesome photos of nature and people. Looks professional.
